A bee swarm can show up without warning — one afternoon your yard is quiet, and the next there’s a buzzing cloud of thousands of bees clustered on a tree branch, fence post, or even the side of your house. If this is happening to you right now, here’s exactly what to do.
Step 1: Stay Calm and Keep Distance
A swarm in the open (not yet settled into a wall or cavity) is usually not aggressive — bees in a swarm have no hive to defend yet. Still, keep children, pets, and neighbors at least 20 feet away, and don’t throw anything at it, spray it with water, or disturb it.
Step 2: Do NOT Spray Pesticide or Try DIY Removal
This is the single biggest mistake homeowners make. Spraying a swarm or an established colony:
- Agitates the bees and dramatically increases sting risk
- Doesn’t kill the queen or the comb inside walls, so the problem returns
- Can drive bees deeper into a wall cavity, making professional removal harder and more expensive later
- Kills a pollinator species that’s already in serious decline
Step 3: Identify — Is It a Swarm or an Established Hive?
- Swarm: A tight, football-shaped cluster of bees hanging in the open, usually temporary (a few hours to a couple of days) while scout bees look for a permanent home. Often easier and cheaper to relocate.
- Established colony: Bees flying in and out of a specific gap — a wall vent, roofline, water meter box, or hole in stucco — means they’ve already built comb inside. This requires full extraction, not just a scoop-and-go.
Step 4: Call a Licensed Live Bee Removal Company — Not a General Exterminator
General pest control companies are trained to kill, not relocate. A licensed bee removal specialist will:
- Assess whether it’s a swarm or established colony
- Safely remove bees and the honeycomb, if present
- Relocate the colony alive to a beekeeper, farm, or sanctuary
- Repair any structural opening the bees used to get in
